What is an SPF (spray foam polyurethane foam) roof system
One of the founders of Factory Direct Roofing LLC. He was a subject matter expert on the committee that revised the NCCER trade school textbooks on roofing. During the discussions over 22 months. There was a heated discussion on whether or not to call SPF a roofing a roof system or just insulation.
It is correct that SPF is an insulator, and it does a fantastic job at insulating buildings. However, a closed-cell SPF to a roof deck provides a superior waterproofing component. Since the material is sprayed in place and adheres to everything, it is known as a self-flashing material. Applying coatings to protect the SPF (it can be damaged by UV light) is one of the best roof systems you can have.

How long should an SPF (spray foam polyurethane foam) provide service
Skill is the key to the success of an SPF roof system. Spraying foam is an art and requires training, practice, and skill to get it right. According to the SPFA (spray polyurethane foam association), the texture of the foam will make or break the system. Roofing contractors who oppose using SPF in roofing must learn how to properly apply the materials.
A well-installed and well-maintained SPF system will last as long as needed. Please keep it clean and keep the coatings up to date. And this system will keep providing service for decades. However, if you do not care for an SPF roof system and the SPF is exposed to UV light. It will deteriorate very quickly and eventually disintegrate. You were leaving your deck open and exposed.
We want to correct a myth out there in the industry. SPF is like a sponge, and the coating is the waterproofing agent. Not true. SPF closed cell is very waterproof, and the coating protects the SPF from UV light. While coatings also provide a waterproofing component, SPF system coatings primarily protect your SPF from UV light damage.

How to restore an SPF (spray foam polyurethane foam) roof system
Factory Direct Roofing does install new SPF systems. Our team is well-trained and skilled in SPF application. We know what we are doing; there is no doubt about that. When we do a new installation, we will inspect the substrate and apply the foam and coatings per the manufacturer’s instructions. And following accepted industry standards.
When we come onto an existing SPF roof system, chances are good that it has already been coated. We will only sometimes know the original foam and coating manufacturer, so we have to do a little more work during the inspection stage of the project. Typically we will want to do some testing and pull a few cores here and there. To inspect the condition of the foam and ensure that we can apply a liquid-applied roof system successfully.
Once we are satisfied, we can restore the existing SPF system. We will power wash the roof using no less than 3500 psi. Many coating manufacturers will use materials that contain fillers, such as zinc oxide. Over time, those fillers deteriorate and become chalky on the roof’s surface. We need to get this off the roof before applying any new materials. NOTE: the materials we use do not contain fillers such as zinc oxide, and for that reason will last much longer. And are more accessible to re-coat when the time comes.
Then our expert team will make repairs and seal up any cracks, splits, or penetrations of flashings once we have completed the repairs and sealed everything up. We will apply a clear coat base that protects and encapsulates the existing SPF system, providing the perfect substrate for topcoat materials. The owner’s warranty option choice will determine the number of passes and thickness of the top coat.

The benefits of a restored SPF (spray foam polyurethane foam) system.
Our top coat is a reflective material, reflecting light from the sun away from the roof. That heat makes its way to the interior of the building and must be removed. Our top coating materials reflect most of the light away from the roof. That heat is not absorbed into the interior of the building. It must be removed and save the owner or the occupant money on their air conditioning bill.
Arizona needs a sound air conditioning system because it gets scorching here. The more heat the air conditioning system must remove. The more wear and tear there will be on your Air conditioner and the means it will break down sooner. By helping keep the heat out of the building, the air conditioner must work less. And by happy happenstance saves you or the occupant the cost of replacing the air conditioner system before its time.
